Employment tribunals - discrimination awards reach record high
The Equal Opportunities Review reports that the total amount awarded in discrimination cases in 2011 was £8,774,403 - £3.5 million more than in 2010.
However, this was mainly due to two NHS cases (Michalak v The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust – an award of just under £4.5million; and Browne v Central Manchester University NHS Foundation - an award of £933,155). When these two cases are excluded from the total, it comes to just under £3.5 million.
The average compensation award for discrimination claims in 2011 was £38,484, but again if the above cases are excluded, this is reduced to £15,130. The median award actually fell to £7,518 (from £8,000 in 2010).
